Our process and how we created a solution

The Problem

Defining the Problem

Keeping in mind his business goal and by analyzing his website and our data from the interview, we narrowed down on a few major pain points.

Competitive Research

Research & Discovery

We interviewed Anthony on his business objectives and typical client behaviors. We researched how other photographers were displaying their work & services.

Creating a Solution

Taking in industry standards and Anthony’s aesthetic preferences, we drew out Low-Fi ideas on the pages we would be presenting on his website.

Building & Testing a Prototype

We built and tested a prototype that would satisfy the stakeholder and user needs. We gathered usability testing results and insights.

1. The Challenge

Anthony wants to grow his Photo Booth business, but after interviewing him and observing his website, the root of the problem was actually a number of things and opened up more opportunities for improvements.

Anthony has years of experience, a unique edge in multi-cultural weddings markets, and an active Instagram following. However, lack of clarity and good presentation of his services, and his outdated single level website could threaten his business.

2. Research & Discovery

In our research process, we took a deeper look into his website issues and what was missing. We saw the root of the issues why his photo booth business was not successful.

Website Analysis

  • Single-Level Page: His whole website was condensed onto 1 page
  • UI Issues: His font sizes & styles were inconsistent and misaligned
  • Lack of Information: There were no details so the user didn't know what the services included
  • Inefficient Contact Form: not have enough specific input fields for Anthony to understand the user's needs

Website Traffic Analysis

84% of users were looking at QuikPix through a mobile phone

Originally, the goal was to only design his website for a desktop but then we discovered most users were viewing his website from a mobile device. In that moment we realized 'WOA!' - we HAVE to create a mobile version as well for a more accurate understanding of the user.
  • 67% of visitors were coming from Instagram
  • social media is a big connect between clients and the website
  • 96% of users were first-time visitors and spend about 3.5 minutes on the site
  • you have to grab their attention to display all the services and why Quik Pix is different
  • 90% of visitors that booked would use the contact form on the homepage
  • we want to improve the contact form, and include a time reference of when Anthony would respond.

Competitive Research & Analysis

To increase his bookings for his Photo Booth service, we needed to better understand the industry standards. A SWOT analysis and competitor research showed how competitors presented their work and services and presented us with more opportunities for his site overall.

User Journey Map

Understanding the user and her expectations helped us to know where her frustrations and pain points were coming from. In order for her to book Photo Booth with Quik Pix, it would need to be elegant, detailed, and easy to understand.

3. Ideating a Solution

Let’s brainstorm !
In order to increase user awareness and bookings for Photo Booth, we initially focused on his Homepage, Photo Booth page, and the Contact page.

Then Anthony decided he wanted us to do a complete re-design of his site so we thought about what the other pages should look like as well. This included the About Me, Services, and Portfolio page.

Information Architecture

The new site map streamlines the user flow and creates a 2nd level to the website, so it is easier for the user to navigate. It also cleans up the homepage and balances the content amongst levels versus condensing it all to one page.

Visual Design

We wanted to create a storytelling experience with a modern and simplistic aesthetic. We created a mood board and style guide in line with our design principles.

From that we handed off our designs to the developer.

Storytelling

Elegant

Minimalistic

3. Building & Testing a Prototype

Rapid wireframing & Mid-Fi wireframes were created to lay out the pages. We designed the first 3 pages and later Anthony requested us to design the remaining pages for his site.

  • Home Page
  • Photo Booth Page
  • Contact Page
  • About Me Page
  • Services Page
  • Portfolio Page

Usability Testing

How were users interacting with our mobile version and what were their patterns?
We used Maze and gave users the task of booking a Photobooth service with Quik Pix:
  • These images show heatmaps of where users were clicking on the page.
  • Some users scrolled down and clicked to see the Photobooth page first - others would use the “let’s talk” button which leads directly to the contact page.
  • Most users clicked on the shortcut “Let’s Talk” button on the Photobooth page rather than scrolling and using any other buttons to get to the contact page.

What did we accomplish?

There was a 50% increase in bookings 4 months after our website restructuring and relaunch.

Detail Photobooth
Services

We provided more details on the experience and expectations to expand his Photobooth business.

Specify Service Type
on Contact Form

We created a form with as much information as he needed to make less touchpoints on follow ups with the customer.

Update Website

We modernized his website to industry standards with a minimalistic approach but wanted to tell a story for a unique appeal.

Mobile & Desktop Solutions

We created a digital solution in both mobile and desktop format since his users are highly active on mobile.
